After languishing through some frankly ludicrous volumes of Batwoman, it's a shock to the system to go directly to a competently written story. It's as if the burden on my brain to parse through ridiculousness has been lifted and I'm able to read unimpeded by nonsense, and finally experience positive surprise rather than utter befuddlement.

Becky Cloonan does the art for an issue here, or most of it. DC made a big deal about this because she was the first ever female Batman artist. Her art's a noticeable departure; to me very manga-influenced. It's a shame she couldn't finish the entire issue. Andy Clarke does the last quarter, which I wouldn't mind if it weren't so different.

I'm finished the Court of Owls part of this book. There ended up being a lot of similarities to The Black Mirror, Snyder's other great Batman work. I liked that one better, personally. I wonder, had Dick Grayson not become Batman maybe Snyder's first Batman story would've been a combination of the two. Luckily, we ended up with both.

It's been a while since I've read Batman. This is the Part Two of The Court of Owls story arc. Perhaps it's to sell more books, but I don't know why they couldn't have made it all one volume. I've forgotten much of Volume 1, and this is a direct continuation. It's one of those instances where I'm glad I take meticulous reading notes.
