... knowledge, and is willing to do anything, even risking his soul in a contract for that knowledge. Mephistopheles, is trying to lead Faust (God's favorite human) astray, echoing the story of Job in the Bible, but with the Devil using a different approach this time, with a contract instead of destruction and death.

I find it interesting how Faust, and the culture in Germany (note this is an adaption of a German legend) deal with the devil. He is treated as an adversary that man can attempt to outsmart, which is a very different take than our American perspective. The title character, Faust, is failing to discover knowledge about the universe and turns to magic, then Mephistopheles (the Devil) to quench that thirst for..
