Batwoman's somehow still engaged. Given DC's now public edict during this time that superheroes couldn't get married, and the ensuing controversy, the real mystery with this volume hasn't been its art caper plot, but how the engagement will be broken. There's been no shortage of possibilities, from a child custody subplot to old lovers popping up.

This new arc is a total shift from what the series had been until now. It's weird to see Batwoman going against an art thief when her bailiwick's been monsters, ghosts and evil cults. It's just so ordinary and makes her rather redundant in Gotham. Also it's been very heavy on Kate's personal life, which I'm all for, it's just not what I'm used to.

The last arc wrapped up with an annual issue, which pretty much blew everything up to start anew. It was a hot mess, but given the circumstances I understand the need to move on. I think Andreyko was chosen because he's openly gay and would seem a sensible choice to address LGBT topics involved in Batwoman, but I don't think he gets the character.

This is a hot mess – or at least what I've read so far. My previous experience with Marc Andreyko had been positive: his Nightwing annual is a personal favorite of mine. His Batwoman annual is not. The art is bad-indie, and shifts constantly. To call the writing fan-fictiony would be to insult fan-fiction. It's just so cringe.

One thing I enjoy about this era of DC is the start of regular variant covers. I just think they're a fun way to showcase art and legacy. Take for example these two, featuring modern Batwoman on the left and original 1950s Batwoman on the right. Personally I prefer the original red and yellow brunette version over modern redhead vampire Batwoman.
