the most frustrating thing in my book is my main character is stuck on a island and I don't know when she is going back to her normal life.

My question is in the beginning the book said Mary was clean and she was a person who never gossiped and how she was a good cook but however, Mary didn't wash her hands after using the bathroom, so how did Mary do that when she was clean. Did she not wash her hands on purpose?
