Not a promising forecast for Fauna's daughter: 'They were words spoken from the heart, but in blissful ignorance. For soon neither her mother's devotion - nor her father's strength - could protect Fleur from the doom that awaited her.'

Another tale in which the innocent main character is continually shat upon by her brutal husband...but this time there's an evil butler instead of an evil housekeeper. DR definitely has a pattern to her storytelling.

An unexpectedly Not Dead character has returned to take vengeance on the vile St Cheviot! But will he save Fleur's gentle lover in time? *dramatic piano chords*

'She was beyond answering, almost beyond caring in the extremity of her anguish. But the last sound that she heard before she temporarily lost her senses was the surge of the sea & a rising wind. [...] Fleur wondered wildly if her mother's ghost would not arise from her watery grave to seek out & protect the daughter who had been so hideously betrayed.'

Moving on to Part 2...tomorrow. Why do I feel so dumb & tired? *ponders the mystery* Ah, perhaps this is my body telling me I should go to bed. Go figure. :P

Two deaths in the last 10 pgs - one who deserved it, one who didn't. :(

'Those words were Dora Clack's epitaph. Her career of greed, of cruelty, of rapaciousness was ended. She had died a most fearful death at the hands of a man whose thirst for money exceeded her own. And she was no loss to anybody in the world.' ...Farewell, skeevy housekeeper villainess!

I'm sensing the approach of that dreaded happy-ending stumbling block known as AMNESIA. Oh noes!

Life in the English-speaking world is off to a rough start for Fauna as she dares to vomit on her new mistress' bedroom carpet. :D

Willow This book sounds rather gritty.

Sarah Mac It's odd in that there's grit beneath the surface, but the grittiest moments aren't described in graphic detail (at least in terms of Stephen King graphicness). It's more of an old-school type atmosphere -- Karla says the style is very like Forever Amber, but I haven't read that one (yet!) so I'll take her word on it.

I read Forever Amber years ago when I was still a teenager. It reminded me of another book I read at the time called Devil Water by Anya Seton. I always looked at those books as being more historical fiction than wild crazy bodice rippers (which I normally read.) I was rather surprised that Forever Amber was considered so scandalous. :)

The part I'm at now is really gritty but details are left to the imagination. Fleur got brutally raped nd continues to be raped by her husband every single time. And he's pissed that she's "frigid." A real keeper. :-P

St Cheviot is definitely in the running for Worst Husband Ever. I suppose he's not as bad as, say, Richard MacAndrew -- but that's a pretty damn low bar. *snort* Not even imagining him as Jason Isaacs has improved my attitude towards his brutal stupidity.

Yeah, Anya Seton was the same era as Amber. I think Seton is generally considered more "serious" than Amber, but who cares? Critics be dumb, yo. :D

I've had Amber on my TBR for years (literally), but I keep putting it off because I'm convinced it'll be a keeper...so there's no rush to read it. Heh.

I think he and MacAndrew will be running neck and neck for the next section. I have no idea what he'll do to Fleur now. O__o

Imagining him as Jason Isaacs is making him even more ebil. He's supposed to look hot, which just makes his actions all the worse.

Sarah Mac See, that's what Shane is lacking -- actual physical appeal. He's so easy to hate because he's fugly as hell. :P Only a woman as dumb as Lori would get mixed up with that kind of gross villainy. Heh. If Shane looked like Jason Isaacs, now...THAT would be excusable. Bwaha.
