I think what the author is trying to say is to appreciate life because you never know what can happen or what will happen. Also that dogs are very loyal and as long as you trust you dog and your dog trusts you then everything will be alright.

The person in my book is a person who cares a lot about others around him and is not selfish. In the story the person tries to protect his dog and try to protect his fellow marines.
