Incorporate readers' suggestions when purchasing materials.

Encourage social reading, promote all kinds of print, promote reading for different reasons, encourage honest criticism of books, celebrate all reading (not just completion), and of course, offer choice.

Allow readers to make meaningful choices to increase their investment in the task: What will they read? Who will they read with? When will they read/what order? Where will they read?

Try to relate reading experiences to real life. Read the news, read websites, write letters, etc.

Any reward should be proximate to the desired behavior, should encourage more of it. Encourage reading by allowing kids to choose books for the school library, not by giving them an eraser.

Meet students where they are - work with existing passions or interests, and then branch out.

Make reading relevant: make it related to an interest or allow for connection and communication afterward.
