She loved him, and trusted him more than anyone else. Although he was silver, he loved ter too. However, she let her heart lead her instead of her head, and that's why she still trusts people that should never be trusted.

This hurt Mare more than anything because this man knew Shade's fate and let him die. The final betrayal Mare experience was with Cat at the end of the third dbook when he chose the crown over her. For example, in King's Cage it says, "Another broken promise. Another Calore betrayal." (pg. 506).

Then, she believed Jon the eye, who lead them to the prison where they set free hundreds of newbloods and killed Elane. However, everything has a cost, and on page 423 of glass sword, Mare says that, "Jon knew this would happen, Jon let this happen." In the process, she sacrificed Shade, her brother, which not only impacted Mare, but also her family and Farley, who would now have to raise the baby alone.

For example, on page 99 of Glass Sword it says that, "Kilhorn is long gone, having left with his new friend." Following that it says, "I barely hear him over Julian's voice in my head. Anyone can betray anyone." This is yet another example of Mare shutting out Julians advice and doing what she thinks is right rather than what actually is right.

This is repeated mainly after she is betrayed by someone she once thought she could trust Throughout the series, Mare never seems to learn her lesson that even those who love her and she loves, can still betray her. Another example of someone betraying Mare is when Kilhorn, the boy she has known all her life and practically raised, tricks her and locks her up in jail.

One theme throughout the red queen series is anyone can betray anyone. To start, on page 345 it says, "Maven has betrayed me." This leads to a war between reds, newbloods, and silvers. In addition, throughout the series Mare always repeats the phrase, "anyone can betray anyone."

Another example of this is when Kilhorn locks her up in jail. The one person that she has known all her life, and the person she practically raised betrayed her and threw her in a cell with Cal. This is the second time she didn't listen to Juliens advice. Then, she believed Jon, a seer, when he told her to go to the jail. She was yet again betrayed when she discovered that he worked for Maven.

Cause: Mavens Betrayal Effect: A war between the reds, silvers, and newbloods that causes even more betrayals. For example, on page 345 it says, "Maven has betrayed me." Through the series, the phrase "Anyone can betray anyone" is repeated many times, mainly after another person she put her trust in betrays her. She never seems to learn her lesson that even the ones who love her, and she loves, can still betray her
