So far in the book we know they're in the future and it isn't pretty but there is a place called the OASIS and it's in virtual reality. The man who made this place died so now everyone is trying to an easter egg in the game because the man said whoever finds it gains control of the game. In the prologue it tells you that the main character finds it, but we don't know how yet.
