First 75 percent? Exquisite. Tense, exciting, complicated, compelling. Hard and harsh, yet wonderfully heart breaking. Then, when villain R harried off on his own, got captured by the comparatively flat evil villain Vax, the story lost its stride and sped along too fast and dismissive. But, O, the majority was stomach lurch heaven. 5 stars! But then 1 star.

Was better when focus was Drayden and Rastay. Now, the focus has shifted to Vax, a secondary villain, if you count Rastay as the original (redeemable) villain. Vax is an unknown, ALL evil, and i find the story has lost power, impact, by turning to Vax and Rastay, since I know there is no enemies to lovers there, only sheer superficial "bad guy." Also, Suddenly Rastay's position in the story is turned in its head.

read kindle sample: Leisurely Sunday morning, rare Sunday off work, finished my het historical romance early this am, so sampling several books, attempting to decide which to read next. Upon completing sample three, after rejecting the first two.... *stares intently at book, heart picks up speed* needs must! Owens' writing demands I continue!
