why is this book so fricken hard to read

Also the first sentence literally says: "This book is designed to be used as a primary textbook in a college-level first course in computing." So why, exactly am I reading this as a middle schooler? Ohhhh, it's because I'm Asian.

I'm technically reading the second edition but I was too lazy to manually input it on Goodreads
