Picking this up after awhile was harder to get into than I thought it would be. The spirit of place that Clavell established was easy to imagine but the addition of utilizing a phonetic writing structure in order to distinguish the english sailors from other characters has felt a little too jarring for me. This was something that was absent in Shogun but I shouldn't say yet if I think it's ineffective or not.
