The setting of this book is sort of like Medieval times, for example, in the beginning of the book, the author describes the castle that Maddie lives in, they explained that there were knights, and the most common transportation was horses, this connects exactly with what happened in the Medieval times. A theme that I have noticed reoccur is that looks can be deceiving. For example, on page 226, Will was talking to Gilan about Maddie, Will said all the good things to Gilan, Maddie thought that since Will was very strict with her, that he would report her as being bad, just because Will was strict doesn't mean anything bad.
