Arthur Schopenhaur says that humankind is driven by blind internal forces. He says the unconscious (or the 'will') drives many of out thoughts that are usually in conflict with our intellect (ego-conscious). This cause us to repel unwanted cognition (perception, awareness, understanding) from consciousness.

Contemporary ideas of unconscious and it's relation to Enlightenment thinking (emphasizing reason and individualism rather than tradition 1601-1700). This idea can also be seen in earlier literature (example William Shakespear). The subject's unconscious process were apparent to others but not to themselves.
