Eduard von Hartmann not only relate unconsciousness to various psychological phenomena such as personality, perception, association of idea and thr emotions but also its role in language, religion, history and the life of society

Arthur Schopenhaur says that humankind is driven by blind internal forces. He says the unconscious (or the 'will') drives many of out thoughts that are usually in conflict with our intellect (ego-conscious). This cause us to repel unwanted cognition (perception, awareness, understanding) from consciousness.

According to Friedrich von Schelling (19th century philosopher) the unconscious is the true bond linking man with nature. 19th century Romantics says that the unconcious makes us understand the universe and ourselves through dreams, mystical ecstacy and poetic imagination.

I think it is for those who already understand most of it but what a summary. If you don't know a thing about it you have a lot to research in order to understand it fully.

This idea can also be seen in earlier literature (example William Shakespear). The subject's unconscious process were apparent to others but not to themselves.
