The chapters on the early christian church are a 'fecking' nightmare of a read. I have to read some pages 2 or 3 times before I can get anything out them - it is like reading another language. But it is still good - I am thoroughly looking forward to the persecution of the Christians - I see it as a sweet reward for battling through the first few hundred years of this saga.

I needed to put Gibbon's story into historical perspective. Rome was founded 600 years before the 'Roman Empire' and was a monarchy for the first 200 years before becoming the famous 'Republic'. So, Gibbon's story starts at the end of a 500 year old republic when the system begins to degenerate with the emperors at the turn of the millennium. I have a journal to accompany my reading of this book - so I can make notes
