Going to start strong and lead into my reading year with DC's leading lady: Wonder Woman. This is the infamous Azzarello/Chiang run that sort of does a Rick Riordan modern mythology thing with Diana and the Greek gods. I've heard as much good as I have bad about it. But, as is the case with most of these Volume Ones I've read, this will be my first Wonder Woman book and I'll go in with a blank slate and an open mind.

After a pretty strong first issue, we spend two fairly uneventful issues hanging out on Paradise Island for what amounts to an exposition party. I suppose it's a conscious decision not to use the name Themyscira in this reboot, either because it's too difficult to pronounce or because they want to callback to the Golden Age. Unfortunate, as it would've played much better within this new focus on historical mythology.

One of the more notable aspects of Cliff Chiang's art is that he draws Wonder Woman physically larger, with a more robust figure. I see that as a positive, as it gives her more the look of a warrior princess than a Disney princess. It also underscores her vulnerability, ironically, because it implies greater attribution of her superpowers to a built-up physical strength as opposed to some intrinsic divinity or magic.
