We don't always have a choice how we get to know one another. Sometimes, people fall into our lives cleanly – as if out of the sky, or as if there were a direct flight from Heaven to Earth – the same sudden way we lose people, who once seemed they would always be part of our lives.

Danny had a tendency to avoid confrontation, which he often regretted. People who picked an argument or a fight with the writer got the idea that he would never fight back; they were surprised, or their feelings were hurt, when Danny did come back at them (...) these people who'd grown used to baiting or goading him were always indignant to discover that the writer had been keeping score.

perhaps he'd purposely decided against choosing to be with anyone who so much as hinted at the promise of permanence.

maybe this was a writer's peculiar burden – namely, that the anxiety he felt as a father was confused with the analysis he brought to bear on the characters in his fiction.

he didn't miss his wife, not anymore. He'd once missed her, but – like his wife herself – the missing-her part had left him.

All writers must know how to distance themselves, to detach themselves from this and that emotional moment.

Maybe this moment of speechlessness helped to make Daniel Baciagalupo become a writer. All those moments when you know you should speak, but you can't think of what to say - as a writer, yo can never give enough attention to those moments.
