A book is better read when you disassociate yourself from any character, but Dostoyevsky constructs his novels in such a way as to make that impossible. All characters are structured to be relatable, which forces you to look deep down inside yourself. I relate to Rodya as I related to Alyosha Karamazov, despite my best efforts not to, which is horrifying as much as it is thought-provoking.
