Voltaire’s bashing of the institution of the monarchy and negative remarks about the court and government as a whole is interesting. He portrays the court as corrupt, but he endorses Saint-Yves’ choice to sacrifice her virginity to Saint-Pouange.

I’m currently reading The Ingenu and things are going well because Saint-Yves was able to free the Ingenu from prison. However, I’m getting nervous because there is a lot of foreshadowing that something bad is going to happen to Saint-Yves.

Voltaire lived and wrote during the Enlightenment in France. It is evident that he was influenced by the various religious movements and wrote to share his religious and philosophical opinions. I like that there are many messages and metaphors in Voltaire’s work. It makes the stories more engaging and interesting to read.

So far I’ve read Candide, Micromegas, Zadig, and What Pleases The Ladies. I’m currently reading The Ingenu. All of these stories have the message that there is no religious or philosophical system that can unlock the secrets of the universe. There will always be large elements of mystery and incomprehensibility. We cannot predict the future or understand the workings of the universe.
