I harbor certain prejudices about comics written by artists. After all, you very rarely end up with a Frank Miller, a George Perez or a Dan Jurgens. Most often you’ll get an art showcase of power panels with just enough plot to thread it together. I’ve read enough of Tony S. Daniel’s work to recognize him as the poster-child for the latter camp. Still, I’m open to being surprised.

There's very little Bruce Wayne in this Batman. There's very little personality to any of the characters, for that matter. Everyone seems to be just soulless action figures smashing into one another and playing out a story that doesn't really have a purpose. If there's any reason for this arc to exist beyond its first issue then I'm not seeing it. Also, the coloring of this book really spoils the art.

It's ironic that a comic written by a top artist would have so much telling and not so much showing. The art looks muddy and drab, the writing's stiff and long-winded, and Batman talks way too much.
