"How the hell did you find me, you and that anorexic spook that you dragged into this?" haha, and those pesky kids and their dog!

"Armansky had never once heard her laugh before, and for years he had been trying to win her trust. Blomkvist had known her for five minutes and she was practically giggling with him. He felt such a loathing for Blomkvist at that moment that he surprised himself."

Her brother apparently did not notice that every word from their father struck her like a whiplash. Instead, Birger suddenly laughed and put his arm around his father and in his own way made light of the situation by making some comment to the effect that you know full well what women are like. He gave Cecilia a cheerful wink and suggested that Harald Vanger take up a position on a little ridge.

It's kind of weird that Sweden has a statute of limitations for murder.

This is one of those stories that is told the way my brother gives directions: "Then you pass a Burger King, but don't turn there; then you pass three streets on your left and two on your right, but don't turn there; then you pass a sign that says I-5 exit 3 miles, but ignore that" OH MY GOD JUST TELL ME WHERE TO TURN.

"The novel was about the author's attempt to get a handle on her sex life during a trip to Paris, and Blomkvist wondered whether he could be called a feminist if he wrote a novel about his own sex life in the voice of a high-school student." Awwww snap!

Meredith Holley (which is a compliment.)

Meredith Holley I think.

Joel i loooove veronica mars. That is all.

Meredith Holley Me too. I just finished re-watching the first season and started the second. She is so freaking cool.

Joel The first season is, like, the best single season of any show ever. Or at least on the list. The others aren't as good but still super fun.

Meredith Holley For sure on the list of best season of any show ever. Like, up there with Firefly and the second season of the West Wing.

Oh man. It is such a good season of a show. And watching it again was kind of funny because I realized that a ton of the things I say are from that show.

If they just would have gotten rid of Logan after the first season, I think the rest of it would have still been good. The third gets pretty bad. Did you watch the preview for the season they were going to make where she went into the FBI? OMG, would have been the BEST EVER.

Joel i admit i haven't seen the last... say, 4 episodes of season 3. they aired them all in one go and i missed them. i did see the "pilot" for season 4 though. indeed, it seemed fun. alas.

your other "great seasons" are excellent selections. i might also add season 3 of buffy.

Meredith Holley Yes, season 3 is wonderful. I couldn't decide which one I wanted to pick because in almost every season there is something that is the best thing ever and something else that is the worst thing ever. I greatly dislike Faith, but Season 3 is truly amazing. Truly.

Also, Season 2 of Slings & Arrows, and Freaks and Geeks, and I don't know what season of the Gilmore Girls. And season 1 of Glee. Dang! And Season 2 of Arrested Development.

There are so many good shows!!! Holy crap. And Downton Abbey. And Sherlock. And maybe season 3 of MI-5?

so. many. good. shows.

Joel Season 2 of gilmore girls is the correct answer. Season 5 in the alternate universe without logan or april.

Ugh, what is it with logans ruining shows?

Meredith Holley Dude, good call. Logan must be an evil name because those guys are the worst. That is true about Season 5. If it didn't have those terrible people, it would be an incredible season.

I was going to say Season 2, but in a fit of insanity I gave all of my seasons, except Season 2, to a friend, so I've only watched Season 2 over and over for the past years, and it makes me think there are probably other good parts to the show that I am not remembering.

Joel There are, but 2 is best. as usual, everything after high school suffers a bit. I never got why they screwed the pooch so badly with rory in college. I mean, there was a WHOLE EPISODE about her search for a good study tree . Did none of the writers ever attend college?

On the plus side, more paris.

Meredith Holley Fact. More Paris. And Doyle.

The college stuff is so weird. If she had gone with Marty, though, things would have gone in a different direction entirely. Which, if you're rory, how do you not go with Marty? It is just not in my conceivable world that she chooses Logan over Marty. I think it reveals that these seasons were written by some dude who identified with Logan or something. Also true of Veronica Mars. Although I guess smart girls do go out with douchey guys all the time. But, I want more from the television!

It is weird to me how Lorelai always goes out with really cool guys and she is kind of an asshole to them and Rory always goes out with douchey guys and she is pretty nice to them. What's up with that?

Joel They are both hot messes, relationship wise. I mean, marrying chris again? Good grief. I liked digger even. Fucking christopher.

Meredith Holley Yeah, but I heard Amy Sherman-Paladino planted the whole reunion with christopher as a fuck you to the station when she got forced out of the show in season 6. That makes sense to me because there's really no recovering after that.

I have to say I like christopher because he's totally hawt, but them getting back together was such a cluster fuck.

Jason Joel wrote: "i loooove veronica mars. That is all."

I'm so glad I'm not alone in this. :)

Meredith Holley It is such a wonderful show. Kristen Bell is so cool.

Jason Wicked cool. She was also in Deadwood briefly, but then she ends up getting fed to the pigs. ♥Kristen Bell♥

But yeah, the first season of Veronica Mars was among the best "first seasons" of any show I've seen. The last season was a disappointment, though.

I also agree about Firefly being amazing, as well. That show had a lot of potential.

Meredith Holley She also appears in Heroes, and her character is the best part of the show and then they kill her off. Stupidly. And then I stop watching the show.

Jason Yeah, I never saw Heroes. There's been too much good television in the last decade! Mostly, though, I've been more into the more "adult" dramas: The Wire, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Deadwood, etc.

message 20: by Meredith (last edited Jun 18, 2012 01:33PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Meredith Holley Oh, yeah, those type of shows are a bad mix with law school, so I've had to avoid them. Even Dexter, which I really loved before school.

Heroes is a really lame show. It was entertaining while I painted my kitchen, though.

Jason I haven't seen Dexter yet, although I own it on Amazon Instant Video. I made the mistake of buying Weeds before trying it out and I fucking haaaaate it. But I paid for it (ugh!), so now I have to see it.

I'm reading Friday Night Lights right now. When I'm done, I want to see the series.

Meredith Holley Yeah, what I saw of the first disk of Weeds was not for me. But I am so devotedly in love with Mary Louise Parker that I will probably watch the whole show at some point. It's another that wouldn't go well with studying law, though. All those cable shows aren't the thing.

I've heard Friday Night Lights is really good. I'll watch it at some point.

I really like Dexter. The first two seasons at least. After that it floundered a little. Not bad, but just, you know, that's the way it goes.

Jason I think Mary Louise Parker has everything going for her...in theory. She's smokin' hot, she's got a way of "non-acting" (which is what I call that whole understated way of not actively engaging in a scene) which makes her seem really cute. But let me tell you, that cuteness wears thin real goddam fast. I'm only in S2—and I'm only watching because I refuse to not watch it because I paid for it, even though I hate it—but I am so tired of her, tired of her nonchalant smirk, and I'm tired of her carrying around that goddam Starbucks with her everywhere she goes. PUT DOWN THE STARBUCKS COFFEE, GIRL!

Jason And that's beside the fact that the whole premise of the show is absurd. I realize it's a "comedy" drama, but you can't just substitute shock value for quality plot and expect people to be okay with that.

Jason And that's my rant on Weeds.

Meredith Holley Yeah, that is a depressing rant. I was really hoping there would be more to it than that because Mary Louise Parker <3333 4eva!

Oh well.

Jason Hey, don't go by me. Some of my closest friends love it and amazingly we are still friends.

(These are the same friends who told me Jersey Shore was funny, though.)

message 28: by Meredith (last edited Jun 18, 2012 03:54PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Meredith Holley haha, I'm still pretty sure I'm going to think Jersey Shore is awesome. Don't take that one away from me.

Nah, I know a ton of people who love Weeds, too. And I might go back to it, but I didn't fall in love at first sight, so you are more just reinforcing the possibility that I won't go back. But, still, Mary Louise Parker . . .

message 29: by Jason (last edited Jun 18, 2012 04:00PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jason Also, I never commented on the two other shows you mentioned earlier: Freaks and Geeks (awesome!!!) and Arrested Development which is hands down the greatest comedy ever made.

If you want to know my opinion on a close second, check out Extras, a British programme from Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. Hi-fucking-larious!!!

Also, were those meant to be hearts up above there? You should learn the HTML code for it, it's pretty neat. Just type: ♥

Meredith Holley I've heard Extras is really good! There was another one by Ricky Gervais my friend was telling me to watch. I'll have to think of what it was.

Hmmm, it is so much more all-caps teen girl to have the actual hearts, though. Having my hearts in math symbols gives me street cred.

Meredith Holley So, I had forgotten this, but Joss Whedon has a cameo on Veronica Mars Season 2! So cool.

Meredith Holley Holy cow. Also, in Season 2 of Veronica Mars, a guy is blackmailing all of the gay kids at school, and he creates a fake email address by the name of Rick Santorum. No joke.

It's like in the West Wing when they say as a side note that the CIA doesn't know where Osama Bin Laden is! Go TV!

I so wish there was a goodreads for TV and movies.

Jason I think this is it. I just spent half a thread naming some awesome foreign and Indie films I've seen recently.

Meredith Holley I want to be able to mark a status update!! I want to mark what I am currently watching and have people judge me for it!

Jason And click "like" if they approve!

Meredith Holley Yes! Or ominously not click like just to show me they don't approve! Either way. I am not picky as long as I can make up some kind of audience reaction.

Meredith Holley And it would be a wonderful place where you always get notifications and the trolls and haters are hilarious and want to talk to you about Truffaut and Godard all the time! As if.
