"The scrap of T-shirt tied around my mouth and nose kept drying out. When it got dry, the tiny ash particles came through it, coating the inside of my mouth with nasty-tasting sludge and bringing on coughing fits."

"The woman had been digging through her suitcase. I saw a flash, a glint of light on metal. She'd pulled out a meat cleaver. She waved it frantically, slashing the air above the two little kids' heads."

Very much, Stephanie! It took 10-15 pages for me to get into his style, but it is going along very well now. A really plausible and gripping story, from what I have seen so far!I liked your review, but will wait to read it carefully until I am done here. I also saw the comments from Anila and references to her reviews, and will check those out shortly.:)
I'm assuming this is after the eruption. Frightening! Nice to see from your comment above, that the story feels plausible. :)
Thanks for the comments, Rachel! Yes, this is all after the eruption, and I would say that the story is highly plausible. And definitely scary! It seems clear that he did a lot of research on the big event, as well as the living conditions that would likely follow. And the 'human face' of the story is both positive and negative, in ways that seem very believable to me. I am definitely going to recommend it for those who can handle the grim and sometimes gory.
