The protagonist of this book is Jane Eyre. She is 11 years old and she is a very inquisitive person. She has a unique and unruly characteristics, such as talking back to her elders. She feels sadness and anger when she mistreated when living with her aunt and the beatings her cousin gave her. Since she is now in a Christian school some call her sinful for her actions, and childish ways.

The setting is in Northern England in the early 19th century. Most of the book takes place in a rural area called Thornfield hall. The setting affects her education and her living conditions, both are improved. The setting also affects Jane by forcing religion upon her because most people were strong believers of Christianity in Northern England. The time period also gave her few rights as a women.

A protagonist that affected Jane earlier in the book was Sarah Reed or her aunt, Mrs.Reed. She wanted Jane to mostly be her obedient servant. She forced her to clean and polish her house. She had little to no rights and allowed her son to terrorize and beat her. All Jane wanted was to have a nice family and be able to do as she please. To Jane, Mrs.Reed was evil.
