holy wow is this the single most depressing novel I've read in a long time - it's the inner monologue of a man who falls into depression after his wife dies, which he feels guilty for and *then* he gets diagnosed with a terminal illness that means he has to go through several psychologically traumatizing surgeries that leave him less and less capable of leading a normal life in the remaining time he's got left
