Reading about Eliot separating with his first wife, and the difficult circumstances under which it happened, which compounds the difficulty for a third party (and even one so removed by time and space as this reader) to judge, one feels nevertheless a sympathy for both sides which couldn't be possible without the biographer's fairness and neutrality to both parties.
