I have just started the book, so I have not read much. I predict that the book is about a farmer leaving the dust bowl to move to California in pursuit of work. This is because that is what happened in reality, and because the title contains "grapes," which is a crop California grows. Also, the cover depicts what appears to be a farming family.

Currently in the book, Joad and Casy, the preacher, find that no one is in Joad's childhood home. The book then discusses what happened to many around the time of the dust bowl. The farmers could not afford to pay rent, and had to leave their property.
