The older omega's face contorted into a stiff smile and he reached up to pat Kent's head. "It's fine. You're in the circle," he said in an overly pleasant tone before turning to rejoin the gathering. Kent blinked. "What's the circle?" "It's the group of people he can't kill because he loves them."

"The car loan people are upping their game."

Connor remained as well, if only because the nurses and doctors didn't dare ask him to leave.

"Is everything alright?" Kent asked, going to Nathan's side. "I came as soon as I could." "We know," Connor said dryly, holding up his phone. "You forgot to hang up, so we all got to hear you hyperventilating on the ride over."

"If you want to survive Hurricane Duke, I suggest you both shower in lava because you smell like Nathan."

To be fair, it was a far more compelling case than the English language was capable of making.

"I've never been anyone's first choice, Nathan."

"I know I don't deserve you, and I'd hoped at least I would have time to convince you the right way, but if being your escape plan is all I can be, it's worth it."

He was fairly certain he was about to die, but at least it was a humorous way to go.
