Handel-- born same year as Bach and Scarlatti. Financially successful. Rode wave of popularity of Italian operas in London, where he lived most of his career. Possibly best organist of his time. Short-temper. Religious/faith. Not much known of his personal life.

Tchaikovsky--anxious, self-doubting, terrible with money, homosexual. Read German and French by age six. Studied law. Studied music formally at 21. Music known for evoking great emotion and frequently incorporating Russian folk songs. Music has a distinctly Russian sound. Disliked the music of Brahms and Handel, and had reservations about Beethoven and Bach. Loved Mozart--"a musical Christ."

This is essentially an encyclopedia with each chapter being an extended entry on one or a few major composers. I'll be reading this, one or two entries at a time, on an ongoing basis. I'll mostly read up on a specific composer prior to attending a concert or recital where works by that composer will be played.
