could do what I'd come for. The goal was to be in my human skin enough to where I'd forget how to be a shadow, forget where Id come from, and become as human as the rest of them. But I couldn't do that without her fulfilling her purpose, and even the thought made me uneasy now.

She stepped into the cab, not even looking back to see if I would follow. At times I felt like one of her little pets, following her to and fro, here and there, at her beck and whim. No one in my lifetime had commanded me in such a way, yet I found I couldn't resist her.

“Because you changed my mind.”

It says his eyes searched mine. His breathing picked up heat radiated from him. I could fill it in the space between us. His fingers by his side twitched. Would he grabbed me choked me how he just saved me out of his own selfish need to consume I could only expect as much from a greedy hungry…

Altair sat in the chair in the corner, the biolamps offering a calming atmosphere. He was reading, a couple of books queued beside him in a pile. Encyclopedias, dictionaries, and, oddly enough, Shakespeare.
He did not regard me, not one bit. But it was unlikely he didn't hear me enter.

Altair turned off ALL the automobiles on the street, drivers getting out and inspecting their suddenly and randomly broken vehicles, just so Lucia could cross safely and as soon as she made it across, they all resumed their motions.

I reached into my skirt pockets. Lo and behold, an item.
Slowly, I removed it. In the palm of my hand, a half-eaten chocolate bar, the wax paper folded several times in on itself. I pulled the paper from the candy, the bite looking like a small dog had gnawed it off.

"No meddling, " I warned out loud, hoping the shadowy stalker might give me distance.
But when I began down the sidewalk, a distinct crunching sound.
I stopped, and so did the crunch.

There was a rustling beside my ear. My scarf moved over my shoulder, as if someone was fixing its placement. Not a person in sight.

Along the gutters, water began to collect, the pavement darkening with every splotch. I did not feel anything on my hand, even after removing my glove. Palm to the sky, not even a drop.
Then by my feet, almost in a perfect circle, no water dropping within a two-foot circumference.
