Everyone should read this book just to see what blacks had to go thru in the 20s until the 60s. Yes you could try to escape but you were risking your life to do so. It’s awful how the North really never did anything to stop this. Guess it wasn’t a priority after they stopped slavery on paper. Shameful on both sides that people can treat each other this terribly.
They didn’t get 40 acres and a mule.
