I hate Krissy's circle/dad & want it to end like Carrie! Heartbreaking how she still wants Sam back. Girl needs real friends. Hate that she got surgery instantly, almost casually; my first major doubt this book is gonna be a good intersex story. Eventually the 'freak' self-talk is gonna be replaced by acceptance and advocacy, right? YA 'hip lingo' and prose bit awkward. Still, I'm invested & hope resolution is good.

Despite not being boring & investing me in the drama, it made irreconcilable choices towards the end & never recovered. The non-intersex author feels much like an outsider to LGBT issues, let alone intersex ones. The soft landing she seemed to be aiming for was ruined by an assault scene that's hurriedly resolved & used to make the character feel good about themselves? Bizarre & frustrating. Strong start, awful end.

Now that tension's settling down, harder to ignore formal issues with prose/dialogue. Lots of cheesy 'fellow kids-isms.' Story taking very safe trajectory, returning to after-school-special vibes. Don't think surgery choice in book is justifiable. Still, I'm invested enough to want to see conclusion; it's never felt boring so far. Liked how Krissy had to face her own prejudices as result of being ostracized. Decent.

Drama! High school experience seems alien to me(I wasn't popular/didnt go to events). Get the feeling Krissy's friends are snakes. Dad meant to be charming but blows diagnosis out of proportion/makes it about him. Hope I like someone in her corner. Overuse of 'hermaphrodite' even after we learn it's outdated. Slight after-school special vibes: explaining AIS to some, commiserating with those who have it. Invested.
