Radiation sickness amongst pacific veterans and the US government denying help. Not a good chapter in our nations history. Why is it so hard to do the right thing?

I’d love to read his oral history on the Great Depression, but it’s 480 pages long, and honestly I don’t know if I can take on another yearlong reading project. The stories are so good though.

The last section about people who worked in the Manhattan project is very good; interestingly most felt that dropping the bomb was necessary but that is should not have been dropped on a city. Not a perspective you hear and I am glad to have read their perspective.

Having read one person’s account of Babi Yar is worth the whole book. It is a shame we only have time in life for mostly a survey if history - what happened, when, and where. The personal stories “make history come alive”, yes, but more importantly give a wider lens through which see the humanity of other people, and to live life in peace with them.
