I forgot how unhinged Jalbert is.

Absolutely awful, shitty detective work. Decide on a perpetrator, investigate no other possibilities. Ugh, I forgot how frustrating this was! Even though that's what makes it so compelling.

I had forgotten that he named his rabid cop "Jalbert"— a fun nod to Les Miserables.

"The Answer Man" — A very fitting end to this collection. There's a man by the side of the road, and our MC encounters him three times. He will answer any question you ask, for the right price, and only for minutes at a time. But of course it's really about something else entirely. 5 Stars

"The Dreamers" — I don't think Lovecraft-style horror is really for me, but this story about a Vietnam vet who ends up doing stenography for a real life mad scientist was entertaining. 4 Stars

"Rattlesnakes" — Maybe I couldn't fully appreciate this one because I haven't read Cujo yet, but also maybe I just don't love stories about little dead creepy kids. I mean, I liked this, but it felt long in a way the other long ones in this just didn't. Still good, though, just not great for me. 4/5 Stars

"Laurie" — First of all, Laurie is a DOG. And no, she doesn't die. This story was adorable. SK can write adorable, just so you know. But also, the cover of the book makes sense for this one. 5 Stars

"Turbulence Expert" — Why must these authors plague me with their tales of scary airplane shit??? Anyway, this was a cool idea, and I would take a longer story in this world, for sure. 5 Stars
