Ahhh, I’m finding this book very unsatisfying. It’s essentially a teenage romance with other stuff mixed in. I find it difficult to care. (I’m sorry!) The way the “racial laws” affect Ferrara’s Jewish elite is interesting but it would have been better for me to pick up something non-fictional. (Fingers crossed I’ll finish this in the next three days.)

I lied… I’m actually just starting this afternoon. Anyway, this is very well written and engaging, and hopefully I’ll be able to finish it the next few days when I don’t have work.

Watched Rome, Open city for a class and am now really interested in reading about Italy’s fascist period. (I’ve now marked a ton of books as “currently reading,” but I’ll actually read this one. I think.)

Of course there are lots of books that present tragic love stories set against the backdrop of war and upheaval, like Gone with the Wind and Doctor Zhivago, but I think for it to really work it has to be a truly grand love story, or perhaps the historical moment simply has to drive it every step of the way rather than simply hanging above it like it does here.
