Wells is a technician. Every phrase is precise, every thought and narrative movement seamless, balanced. His details are so surprising and yet so vivid -- so right -- that you can't help but believe they are drawn from real life observation. The death of the fourth passenger, falling over the gunwale and striking his head on some flotsam, has too much brutal fidelity to feel made up. A great book, so far.
