The Prince lets his friend learn inadvertently about the destruction. My guess is that his friend was an original Elantris that survived the purge, but I could be wrong.

The head priest is playing a dangerous game given how amped up his religion is against the Elantrians.
Then again, this section has a lot of deadly games being played. Sirini basically brought out the nuclear option. Unlikely she'll have the upper hand again with the king.
