the only compelling parts of this novel so far have been the wasps & this moment right here where Jack talks himself out of the dead woman being in the bathtub but then immediately being confronted by her ghost

but I do hate Jack and his inability to take responsibility for his own (multitudinous) mistakes and will rejoice when he inevitably dies

"He could be off the juice for 20 years and still when he came home at night and she embraced him at the door, he would see-sense (sic??) that little flare of her nostrils as she tried to divine scotch or gin fumes riding the outbound train of his exhalation."

people don't write like this, and they don't write like this for a reason, and the reason is: it is cringy and sounds stupid

i hate Jack actually and violence against children is my least favorite thing in a book so I might not even finish this because what is the point

All of you people have lied to me. You guys told me that Stephen King was a good writer, but it turns out that he's just a little sexist ("her skirt came down to her mid calf but it didn't need to be any shorter in order for you to know she had good legs"??? "she walked away, pert bottom twitching"?????) and really, really pretentious

I actively dislike this. It feels heavy handed. The child is psychic, the dad is a drunk, the woman is the saddest most pathetic woman I've ever heard of in my life, they are doomed from the start, and yeah, we love Eurydice and Orpheus knowing they are doomed, I love Oedipus for the same reason, but this doesn't feel like that. This feels like trauma porn and I don't care about these sad soggy white people

I'm sure nothing bad will happen when this man who definitely needs to go to therapy takes his wife and child to be snowed into a remote and empty hotel for an entire winter! Everything will be so good and fine for them since the hotel is definitely not haunted and no one is prone to excessive violence!

Bit heavy on the exposition so far but I suppose that's not a CRIME
