In case anyone wants a plot summary:Julian Bell is burnt out.
He became famous overnight when he released not one, not two, but three bestselling books in under four years, becoming the youngest bestselling author in New York Time's history. But that was two years ago. Now he’s stuck with a useless manuscript, a serious case of writer’s block, and a publisher determined to make him a bestselling author again.
So when he’s sent to a tiny Massachusetts town with an unusually complicated history, Julian assumes it’s just another desperate attempt to get him writing.
He doesn’t expect to get lost on his first day.
He doesn’t expect to make friends with the charming local man who seems to know everyone.
And he definitely doesn’t expect to meet Cordy Mercer.
Cordy is your average small-town girl. She knows everyone and everything, right down to who’s dating who. She’s grown up under the watchful care of her eccentric aunts and lives a perfectly ordinary life working at the local library.
Well.
Except for the fact that she’s a witch.
For generations, Cordy’s family has guarded the town’s magical history, keeping its secrets hidden from the ordinary people who call the town home. And the last thing Cordy needs is a bestselling author digging through the archives, asking questions, and getting dangerously close to things he was never supposed to find.
Especially when Julian starts looking into the town’s history and discovers that the stories everyone knows don’t quite add up.
The more he investigates, the more strange inconsistencies he finds.
The more Cordy tries to keep him away from the truth, the closer they become.
And the more Julian learns about the town, the more he begins to suspect that its history isn’t simply complicated.
It has been deliberately hidden.
Soon, what began as a research assignment becomes something neither of them could have anticipated. Because beneath the town’s charming streets, old family stories, and generations of whispered gossip lies a secret that has shaped the lives of Cordy’s family for centuries.
A secret someone is willing to do anything to protect.
As Julian gets closer to the truth—and to Cordy—he finds himself caught between the story everyone believes and the one buried beneath it.
And Cordy is forced to confront a question she has spent her entire life avoiding:
What if the history she was taught to fear was never the whole truth?
Because someone is rewriting the past.
Someone is manipulating the present.
And if Cordy and Julian don't figure out who—and why—the next chapter of the town's history may continue to be written in blood.
