Will Parker, a young boy, lives in a large village that is controlled by tripods. In fact, nearly the whole world is. On his 13th birthday he will be capped. This means that the tripods will have complete control over him. He doesn't want this to happen, so he gets a map and compass from a homeless man and thinks about leaving for the White Mountains (the one place where people are free).
