The moral universe of the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2000s was that it was acceptable for the star players to push around the players that didn't perform as well. Shaq would be able to push around Mark Madsen if he wanted to, and Kobe could also do whatever he wanted. If a bench player tried to cause trouble, they would most likely be cut from the team.
