After Augustus died, Hazel is in mourning. She talks to other people, but is very snappy, especially to her parents and friends, like Isaac. It must be very hard on Hazel, seeing as they both had cancer, and the person she loved died from it.-summary

Though most of the book is pretty sad, it has a somewhat happy ending. Through Augustus's death, Hazel learns some things about herself, and her role in the world. This adds to the overall themes of the book, which are love, friendship, and life.-theme

Hazel gets put on BiPAP. She is in the hospital, just chatting with her parents. This is a very realistic moment, and it's easy and natural to visualize because it happens so often, even if it's not because of cancer. It shows that Hazel and her family are still normal people, even though she has an illness. -visualization

The scenes before and after Gus died were very fascinating and captivating. It is a very sad moment, but something was bound to happen before the end of the book. The reader has a ride of emotions when reading about Gus's death and Hazel's reaction, which adds a lot to the book.-favorites

Why does the author include the part where something goes wrong with Augustus's tube, and Hazel has to go and help him and call an ambulance? Is it just to give the reader a rush, or to actually show the reality of cancer? -ask

"It didn't have any of the cloyingly bright primary color-painted walls or the framed paintings of dogs driving cars that one found at Children's..." To cloy is to disgust or sicken with an excess of sweetness, richness, or sentiment. Hazel is describing the Memorial.-vocab

The next day Augustus and Hazel go out to a cafe, and take a walk while just talking about their lives. Hazel starts crying when Gus started talking about his illness, but he then comforts her. I feel a connection to this because it's a very real thing that happens almost every single day. All the time I see couples in movie and in real life acting like this, so it's very relatable.-connection

Hazel and Gus go to the Anne Frank house, then go back to their hotel room and kiss. I think that their parents have mixed feelings about them being a couple, because one or both of them is going to get hurt in one way or another.-prediction

I can really visualize the moment when Hazel and Van Housen are arguing about the ending of "The Imperial Affliction". Hazel really wants to know what happens, but Van Housen had been drinking and is not going along with it. The author uses many intriguing details in this scene.-visualization

I like the moment when Gus and Hazel finally get to meet Peter Van Housen, the author of their favorite book. I like it because it shows that in some ways they are just like regular people, with dreams and goals. I think it brings the reader a good feeling when Hazel and Gus get to live their dreams.-favorites

In this section Hazel and Augustus arrive in the Netherlands. They walk around go to a cafe, and talk about deep topics like the afterlife. It's a good break from everything medical going on with them.-summary
