Never read a book where the author rambles as much as he does. I thought it would get better as the book went on, but every chapter had several examples of the author going on tangents that seemed to distract from the main thrust of whatever the chapter was supposed to be about. It felt more like a book of random facts and information than a unified or thematic treatment of the Byzantine Empire.
