The book begins with a team of scientists being killed at their campsite in the Congo jungle by a mysterious figure. After that, a team of scientists of the same company go out on a flight to Africa to meet up with someone to guide them through the same jungle, where they must search for a special kind of diamond. One of the most unique members of this group is a sign language-speaking gorilla named Amy.

Congo takes place in the year 1979. The book mostly takes place in the jungles of Africa. Because it's in the jungle, there aren't too many people patrolling around to make sure that people aren't committing illegal acts. I would consider the moral universe to a bit bad in the setting, because the ERTS team needs to fight against other companies to achieve their goal.
