Fill can now stay in Maycomb. A strange happening occurs where two men come to their porch and Atticus steps out to talk to them. Scout overhears them speaking of Tom Robinson. Later on, Atticus takes a light bulb with an extension cord with him into the car even though he usually walks. Jem and Scout follow him.

Atticus being the defense lawyer for Tom Robinson who was believed to rape someone, causes Jem and Scout to be looked at and whispered about through town. Later on, Scout and Jem go to Calpurnia's church. Scout tries to convince Atticus that they don't need Calpurnia anymore and to let her go.

The whole school year passes with Scout having to deal with a slow curriculum. One day she passed by the Radley place and found some tin foil inside of a hole in one of the trees. She found two pieces of gum and chewed it. When she arrived home she told Jem what she had found and he forced her to spit it out.

September came, Scout was getting ready to go to school for the first time. She went into school to find her teacher Miss Caroline, says the Atticus must have taught Scout to read. She makes Scout feel bad for being literate.
