As they travel back to Delphi Keep, Ian and Theo are intercepted by Searle, a snobbish boy who is jealous of Ian's jewelry box. They fight over the box and Madam Scargill gets involved. She takes away the box after lying from the boys and Theo. The boys are sent to stay in their rooms without supper. Theo later sneaks him supper as he plans to retake the jewelry box. He grabs it and hides it in the rarely used attic.

On the trip to Castle Dover in the Earl's car, a friend of the Earl, Thatcher, asks to later inspect the Grecian writing on the side of the box. Ian reluctantly agrees not wanting to give up the treasure he just found again. As soon as they arrive at the castle, Ian is ordered to stay behind instead of going with the other children.

Because of Ian's honesty, he gets to ride with the Earl in his car. Before they get into the car, Ian runs to the tower to get his treasure jewelry box. Earlier he hid the box from Madame Scargill because she wanted to take it from him. He has to waste time looking for it because ahe does not he took it from her. While wasting time he spots a beautiful gold necklace with blue and pink crystals.

The whole orphanage is from the effects of the beasts rampage. Because of this, the children are transported to Castle Dover. The Earl discusses how he wants to find the beasts' lair. Ian confesses that he and Theo know where it is. Ian goes to the tower to get the box that he hid from Madame Scargill and Searle.

Even though the beast dropped out of a three story building, the corpse was not found. The Earl and his companions make it their duty to hunt and kill the beast. Carl and Ian bond since both of them were injured by the beast. As Theo and Ian are sitting together, Theo theorizes that the beast was only there to hunt her down.

The beast finally managed to break into the house. Madame Scargill, Carl, Ian, and Theo hear the beast smashing the room as he gets closer to them. Suddenly, it went eerily silent. Ian goes to sacrifice himself. Ian tries to divert beast from the people on towers. As Ian is about to be hurt, Carl knocks the beast out the window. A little while later, the earl and his companions show up to kill the beast.

The beast is slamming against the door. One of the headmistresses tries to save the children, but Theo drags her along. The hiding place the orphanage had is running out of room, and Madame Dimbleby, Ian, Carl, and Theo are forced to go into the haunted tower. All four are scared, so they go check to see if the door is closed. The door almost comes off its hinges because the beast is banging against it.

The Earl of Kent identifies the beast as a hellhound. They travel back to Castle Dover to gather hunting rifles to protect the children. The schoolmasters round up the children and take them to the west wing of Delphi Keep. Ian stays behind to help in the cellar. The beast manages to makes its way to the room next to the cellar.

The Earl of Kent arrives with two special guests, Thatcher and Perry, who are schoolmasters. He brings another guest, Carl, who is an orphan. Theo tries to befriend Carl, but he is shocked and scared about the situation. The Earl and his guests go to Ian's room to greet him and show Carl his accommodations. Ian looks outside and see that the beast of Greek tunnel followed the scent of Theo and him.

Ian is left to be the caretaker of the new girl. He names her Theodosia Fields, who he calls Theo. The story fast forwards to Theo being a child. She and Ian explore the cliffs near Delphi Keep, and they discover a hidden Greek tunnel. As the go farther into the tunnel, Ian discovers a jewelry box, and they are chased by a wolf-like creature. They escape from the creature.

Madam Scargill quickly closed and bolted the door. She walked down the hall and Ian came out of his hiding place. He walked down to the nursery because he was curious about the abandoned child. Ian overhears Madam Scargill talking to another lady about the noise she and Ian heard as the beast. He also hears them talking about the child. She has an eye shaped birthmark on her left shoulder. Both ladies notice Ian.
