Aunt Alexandra is coming to stay with Jem and Scout for awhile. She came to give Scout and Jem a female role model. Everyone knows her and welcomes her back. Harper Lee explains the history of Maycomb. Atticus has a talk with Jem and Scout about living up to their name. Acticus is stern and mean. Which makes Scout cry. They both know Aunt Alexandra put him up to this.

Jem holds his agreement of reading to Mrs. Dubose every day after school for a month. Scout joins him. Each day she makes him read until her alarm goes off and they both leave. After they finishied the month ( and a week) she dies. Atticus explains to them that she was a morphine addict but was the bravest lady he had meet. She leaves Jem a camellia. Atticus tells him it was her way of saying everything is alright.

Scout is upset because Atticus is a old dad and can't do anything special like other dads in the town. Later Scout and Jem encounter a mad dog on the street. The town sheriff and Atticus come to help catch the dog. Atticus shoots the dog very well. Everyone in the town says he has been the best shooter in town. Jem and Scout don't understand why Atticus did not tell them he knew how to shoot so well.

Maycomb enjoyed a snow storm. Mrs. Maudie's house burns down. Atticus is a lawyer who is helping a African American. At school Scout's classmates and her cousins makes fun of him. Atticus is in a case which is going to ruin their family.

continued.. They find many treasures in the hole in the tree. When they are curious who is leaving these things. They have the idea to write a note. The next day when they go to put the note in the hole they see the hole is filled with cement. They ask Mr. Radley if he did this. He says yes and explains that it was dead. Jem asks Atticus if the tree is dying and Atticus says no.

Jem goes back out in the night to get his pants. Scout is worried he will get caught. Jem returns with his pants but seems to be in a bad mood. For days he does not talk much. Then finally he tells Scout that when he went to get his pants they were patched up and folded on the fence. They both thought someone knew Jem was coming back for the pants but didn't understand who would know. The next days they find ....

Dill returns to Maycomb for the summer. Scout finds a penny in a tree on the Radley lot. The next day she also finds an ancient penny. They all play a game where a person gets in the tire and they push the tire. When Scout was in the tire, Jem pushed really hard and Scout landed in the Radley yard. When she struggled to get out she heard a laughter in the house.

continued ..and wants her fired. Scout has a long rest of day at school. When she gets home she is all sad but Cal makes her crackling bread to make up for yelling at her. Scout also explains to her dad what Miss Caroline said about her reading. Scout and her dad make a little deal to keep reading with each other but not tell anyone.

Jem invites Walter over for dinner(lunch) because Scout was making fun of and hurting Walter. When the children eat their meal Walter asks for syrup. When Walter receives the syrup he puts the syrup across all of his food. Scout finds this gross and rudely asks what he is doing. Cal finds this very disrespectful and brings Scout into the kitchen and gives her a mean and long talk. After the talk Scout hates Cal...
