There are moments I feel I am devouring this book, but I read a line and have to force myself to stop. Such unimaginable atrocities are so easy to ignore, to struggle to imagine, and I have to force myself to recognize that I just read that. Horrors are written so factually and then I realize I’ve just been going from one to the next. But how could one be expected to be able to really take these in?

Wow. I’ve just read the preface and can feel the weight of this story, and the sad beauty of the writing. I read many Holocaust stories in elementary and high school. The last one I read was a few years ago now and was the most descriptive in terms of the atrocities. As I get older these get harder to read. But, we’ve discussed the responsibility to teach these because already the kids don’t know about it.
