Book 7

In many ways, Mr Wisdom is the closest to truth yet. But Vertue on its own is ultimately futile. Wisdom on its own is ultimately a trap. Mr Broad on his own is ultimately well-intentioned, but meaningless.

“What does not satisfy when we find it, was not the thing we were desiring.” Bingo.

Book 6

I loved seeing how differing humanist philosophies interacted with, and ultimately disproved, each other. I also loved that the “peaceful” philosophies of humanism and enlightenment are about to be attacked by the “violent” philosophies of Marxism and fascism. Fascinating allegory here!

I read Book 4 this morning before church—it’s a short one! I absolutely *loved* Reason’s statements that:

1) Without Reason, Philosophy, and Theology working together, escape from deception is impossible, and
2) Living with unanswered questions and doubts must become an accepted part of life, since the need to express belief or make decisions prematurely leads to further deception.

Finished Book 2! This is amazing! In addition to being a retelling of The Pilgrim’s Progress, to which it thus feels very similar, it also bears much resemblance to St Augustine’s Confessions, in the sense that Lewis is bringing us on the journey of everything he tried—both experiential and philosophical—before he surrendered his life to Christ. It’s simply wonderful!

Finished Book 1! This is predictably amazing—I’m already completely captivated!

Oh. My. Goodness. My edition contains C. S. Lewis’s “Preface to the Third Edition,” and it should be required reading for anyone and everyone reading Lewis. It’s completely brilliant. It outlines his understanding of “Romanticism” (7 different connotations of that word/concept!), as well as his desire for eternity that lead him to God, as well as the dangers of extremism and how they feed each other.

Very excited to be reading this Lewis for the first time, together with Faith’s Theology Book Club!
