Chapter six reminds me of the Indian tradition of vidai. Marriage is supposed to be joyous, but for women of a household (as it is for Tilde and King Rivani) vidai always seems to me, historically, a ritual of grief. A strong and emotionally crushing start to the series!

The prologue had me very confused but things are clearing up as the world builds. It’s giving game of thrones vibes but with a predominantly women led cast. It’s not my usual type of read, quite dark and ruthless, but I’m into it so far! Also some secret hidden forest magic!? Cool!
