it manages to be simultaneously ahead of its time and painfully racist.
I'm sure at the time it WAS seen as progressive but I can't get over the use of the word "savage." if you respect this man, how can you use such a word to describe him? even if that's what was normal at the time, it has such a disrespectful connotation!
otherwise, luscious prose and inventive atmosphere. love the "drowned himself to sleep."
